Lecture 2
Leaders in management are often faced with difficult decisions and hard choices to make in regards to the work place. There are many delicate issues that must be dealt with in a very sanative manor. MIT's are no exception; in fact, they may struggle with this task more than any other manager.
All employees must remember to handle all issues as outlined in the code of ethic in our employee handbook. You will be asked to review the handbook at the conclusion of this lecture. The handbook gives specific example and outlines the steps to take to handle different situations. One problem that MIT’s are commonly faced with is the delivery method. Managers must remember to always use a delicate tone. The tone of voice is 87% of what is heard by another person and only 13% is what you say. Therefore, when given feedback and constructive criticism it is important to rehearse what you want to say before you say it. It might even help to say it to your self or to another collage to see how they would respond if they were the person to receive the feedback. By doing this, the manager will have an opportunity to change his or her approach and find the right way to say something. This is important because once something is said you can never take it back.
Another thing that all managers should keep in mind is the different personality that they are managing. You should not follow the golden rule of:
Do on to other as you would have them do on to you.
This rule is often used and it often comes back to bite you. Everyone handles different situations differently; therefore, everyone must handle each situation with each person in a manor that will be most receptive to that individual. That is called the platinum rule:
Do on to other as they would have you do.
Another important thing to remember is the law. There are certain things that managers and companies can say and cannot say. Those legalities will protect you and your employer for lawsuits and violating trust with your staff. If anything does happen that you are not sure of report it immediately to human resources. They will take care of the situation.
At this time, please refer to your employee handbook for our code of ethics.
